THE OLDER PEOPLE’S FORUM ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

HELD AT 2PM ON THE 7TH NOVEMBER 2005

1. Welcome by the Deputy Mayor of Blackburn with Darwen, Cllr Dorothy Walsh

Mr Hookham introduced the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Dorothy Walsh. Cllr Walsh expressed her pleasure at being invited to the meeting and was pleased to see so many members present. As Older People’s Champion, she tries to champion many issues on our behalf and has been promoting courses for older people.

2. Election of Officers and Committee Members for the coming year

Cllr Walsh read out the nominations for officers. Messers Frank Hookham (Chair), Mike Madigan (Vice chair), Brian Todd (Secretary) and Mrs Pauline Walsh (Treasurer) were all appointed to their posts as nobody was willing to stand in opposition. 

Mr Hookham took the chair for the rest of the meeting.

There were eleven nominations for ten places on the management committee and a ballot was held. The candidates were asked to identify themselves. Ballot papers were completed and collected.

3. Apologies

Apologies were given. 

4. Minutes of the last meeting and matters arising

The minutes were agreed as a true and accurate record. Proposed by Cllr D Walsh and seconded by Mrs Shirley Wareing.

Miss Duffy is currently on maternity leave and Miss Hulse has been appointed to cover her absence.

5. Presentation of the Annual Report

This was circulated prior to the meeting and further copies were made available. Mr Hookham noted that membership continued to increase and was now closer to 1200. Mr Hookham opened to the floor for comment and questions. None were forthcoming.

6. Presentation of Accounts

Mr Prugar circulated the latest update on the Forum accounts and was willing to address any queries. There were none. 

7. Jane Musgrove – Podiatry

Mr Hookham introduced our first guest speaker, Jane Musgrove, Podiatry Team Leader at Darwen Health Centre. She was accompanied by Mr Clive Brown.

Using a powerpoint presentation, Ms Musgrove explained the difference in definitions of the terms chiropody and podiatry. She outlined the service available and the demands made on it. Access to the service was explained. She then gave valuable general advice on foot care and also included the care of nails, corns and callus, chilblains, in-growing toe nails and athletes foot. She offered advice on footware.

There was opportunity for questions. This was well received.

Advice leaflets and free samples of foot cream were made available.

Mr Hookham thanked Ms Musgrove for her presentation.

8. Peter Ellel – Men’s Health

Mr Hookham introduced our next guest speaker, Mr Peter Ellel, Larkhill Health Centre.

Using a powerpoint presentation, Mr Ellel outlined a project on men’s health that has been taking place in the northern part of Blackburn. He gave background information that showed that men did not access health care sufficiently because they dislike attending doctors’ surgeries or clinics. Alternative venues were being explored. Mr Ellel gave evidence for the need of promoting men’s health issues; outlined the morbidity concerns; explained intervention initiatives and expressed hopes for the future.

The opportunity for questions was well received.

Mr Ellel welcomed the positive response of members and asked that we write to the local authority in support of the initiative and encouraged members to use the facility.

Mr Hookham thanked Mr Ellel for his presentation.

9. Lynne Bentley and Lindsey Holden – Ask about Medicines Week

Mr Hookham introduced our next guest speakers, Ms Lynne Bentley and Ms Lindsey Holden.

Our speakers were present to promote the ‘Ask about Medicines Week’, 7th – 11th November 2005. Ms Holden, a pharmacist, explained that this is the third year of a national campaign to encourage all of us to ask questions about our prescribed medicines. This week the medical management team are out and about in the community to answer people’s questions. Details of venues were given and a range of leaflets were made available to members.

The opportunity for questions was well received.

Mr Hookham thanked Ms Bentley and Ms Holden for their presentation.

10. Results of Ballot for the Membership of the Forum Management Committee

The votes were counted by persons independent of the Forum. The results were as follows:

Jean Lowe 138 votes; Imelda Heald 131 votes; Irene Thornley 126 votes;

Jenny Watson 117 votes; Jean Bogg 120 votes; Marian Hargreaves 124 votes;

Doreen Stockdale 125 votes; Abdul Piracha 75 votes; Florence Eccles 119 votes;

Andrew Prugar 101 votes; Jack Holden 117 votes.

The following were subsequently appointed as Members of the Forum Management Committee – Jean Lowe, Imelda Heald, Irene Thornley, Jenny Watson, Jean Bogg, Marian Hargreaves, Doreen Stockdale, Florence Eccles, Andrew Prugar, and Jack Holden.

Mr Hookham thanked Mr Prugar, who had stepped in during the last year as Acting Treasurer, for his work.

Mr Todd  announced that there is to be a training session for the newly formed committee on 21st November 2005 hosted by Bootstrap.

11. Votes of Thanks

Mr Hookham proposed a vote of thanks to the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Dorothy Walsh. The Forum thanks the Deputy Mayor for her support of the Forum and for fitting us into her busy schedule.

Mr Hookham also proposed a vote of thanks to all our guest speakers.

A thank you also to all the members present for their attendance and support.

The meeting ended at 3.35pm and was followed by afternoon tea.
